MILESTONE
There aren’t many people who have been around for more UConn sporting events than Wayne Norman, a 25-year veteran of the Connecticut airwaves. With his work Thursday night, the UConn Radio Network’s broadcaster called his 1,000th game for the network.
Norman made his debut for the network Sept. 22, 1979, as the UConn football team lost to Navy 21-10. Thursday was his 255th Husky football game.
He has also been on the air for 717 men’s basketball games, including both national championships, and 28 women’s basketball games.
Norman has worked with nine different broadcast partners, including Marty Glickman, Bob Heussler and Joe D’Ambrosio. D’Ambrosio teamed up with Norman occasionally in the late 1980s to call men’s basketball games, and the two have been full-time, on-air partners for UConn football and men’s basketball broadcasts since 1992.
Norman, a native Californian, moved to Connecticut with his family as a teenager. He is a 1966 Trumbull High graduate and 1970 UConn graduate.
Norman, who also called many games for WHUS radio while an undergraduate in Storrs, is currently working on a book with fellow UConn alum Bob Porter on Husky basketball history.
