WASHINGTON, D. C. — If you happen to tune in 1050-AM on your radio tonight and hear Wayne Norman, do not adjust your dial.
The longtime voice of UConn basketball and football will be pulling double duty this weekend, calling the St. John’s/Wisconsin game (7:40 PM tip) in New York City as well as the UConn game against Hampton (2:30 PM tip) on the UConn Radio Network.
St. John’s regular broadcast tandem of Gary Cohen and Ed Coleman also happen to do the Mets, meaning they are in spring training.
Cohen is flying up for the game, but Coleman had to stay behind in Florida so Nelligan Sports, which syndicates St. John’s basketball, called and asked Norman to step in for tonight’s game against Wisconsin and he agreed.
Learning about Wisconsin has required a fair amount of homework — Norman was running around the MCI Center tracking down an interview with the coach and studying their notes during their shootaround.
St. John’s, which he has already seen play twice this year, did not require any cramming.
“I know St. John’s, trust me. I know Marcus Hatten could have a 6-for-26 game and still score 30 points,” Norman said.
Norman’s full-time gig is program director and morning drive-time (6 AM to 10 AM) voice of WILI AM-1400 in Willimantic. This can get particularly prickly during the basketball season when he has to be on the air at 6 in the morning after a road game at Rutgers or Boston College, for example.
He has been doing color commentary for both UConn basketball and football since the 1981-1982 seasons. He started with legendary play-by-play voice Marty Glickman and has been with Joe D’Ambrosio for the last 11 years.
UConn games are networked by WTIC AM-1080 in Hartford and picked up by six station in Connecticut, including WSUB AM-980 in Groton and his home station, WILI AM-1400 in Willimantic.
